Thursday 4/25 was a day full of new experiences with 2 facility tours for Animal Science. Our first stop was Borgic Farms west of Nokomis, top producing hog farm in the state of Illinois. They have 12,000 Sows total, 10,000 working (able to breed and have litters). They have roughly 1,400 piglets each day, and wean 100 sows everyday. Students got to tour the Farrowing barns, some even got the experience of sleeving a piglet - Blayne, Leeland and Isaiah received a little souvenir at the end for trying something new! Breeding barn, full AI with teasing boars on site, weaning barn where piglets will then get sorted and ready for a truck to haul to grower locations. They provide 450,000 market hogs for the market each year.
Next we stopped at Baumans Dairy Farm, 7th generation family farm that has over 200 head of Dairy Cows. They are getting an average of 92-93 lbs of milk a day from one cow. Students got to experience the milking process in the parlor & bottle feed some bucket calves. Calves are weaned from their mothers after 12-24 hours as the cows will overproduce milk and it can make the calves sick from eating too much.
We thank both sites for hosting us and allowing students new opportunities, as well as relate management and care practices learned in class to real life industry settings.

On May 5th, 2024, the senior class will host a Baccalaureate service at 4:00 pm at the Pana Christian Church. This is a non-denominational service to celebrate the graduating seniors of Pana High. If you are interested please have your seniors check their email to fill out the RSVP. This event is open to the community! All families and students are welcome to attend.
The class of 2024 has chosen as the Most Musical Seniors, John Berns and Emma Stephens. Congratulations to these All-State Musicians.
